I could play golf when I first started (also called This is what your first golf lesson should have been) – A book that follows the journey of a frustrated golfer on the verge of giving up the game, that he once found to be so much fun, away because of what he believed to be his own lack of skill and ability to play properly. The book addresses the golfer’s issues in a logical sequence but in a way that is quite different to those traditional ideas and methods that you may have experienced by taking golf lessons elsewhere.

Here’s a review of an early version of the book from a couple of years back:

5.0 out of 5 stars A different way to look at golf!

Hardie’s view is that we golfers are given misleading golfing instructional information, what he calls “public knowledge” and what Americans might know as Old Wives Tales. He goes through a number of them and it makes for interesting reading.

This has nothing to do with swing theory and there are no graphics showing arcs and all that like most golf instruction media presents, no new way to swing or complex moves to learn. It is quite the opposite of that and I found it helpful for me and got good results applying the ideas (or rather by not applying previously held ideas).

How to drive the golf ball as far as you possibly can – This book is a simple easy to follow step by step guide which will allow you to develop your driving by firstly providing you with an understanding of just what you need to do, then giving you a bunch of different experiences to apply to your game, all of which will allow you to develop your ability to drive the golf ball as far as you possibly can.

Now before you start thinking this book will only be for elite level golfers who can already hit the golf ball ‘for miles’ and just want to hit it further again.

That’s not entirely correct – as in actual fact, the golfers who can benefit the most from driving the ball as far as they possibly can are the golfers who hit the ball a relatively short distance compared to other golfers.

What do other golfers think about this book?

A fabulous book written in his characteristic relaxed and amusing style. Gives a balanced and well thought out approach to driving the golf ball.

This book provides a quick and easy to implement combination of solutions.

The question is – would you rather continue the agony that is shanking your golf shots or would you like to sort your problem out once and for all?

Something that can happen as you will soon discover in The Little Book of Shanking.

Here’s what one happy golfer said about the book:

The Little Book of Putting
The Little Book of Putting

The Little Book of Putting – There are only basics in the game of golf, regardless of the level of golf that you play.

Reducing the number of putts you have in a round is the easiest and quickest way to reduce your scores, handicap and gain consistency in your game.

Over the years, I have played with plenty of golfers who constantly change putters, usually seeking to improve their game with the latest and greatest new putter model but after a while, their game invariably turns back to the usual performance and the golfer heads off to get another putter as this cycle repeats but no long lasting improvement is gained.

Most of them continue to waste one, two or more shots on each hole when putting, yet by understanding what to do and how to do it, along with a few minutes of doing it on a practice green each week – they could save a huge amount of shots each game.

Take a minute to think about your last game:

What your score would have been if you had holed every first putt you had?

Regardless of the level of golf that you play, I bet it would have been a lot lower than it was.

This book contains everything you need to know, to make that happen.

The Little Book of Chipping
The Little Book of Chipping

The Little Book of Chipping – Chipping is a part of the game of golf that for whatever reason, most golfers never seem to be really taught how to do or if they were given some tuition at some point in their golfing career, they are generally shown a few basic ideas and then left to figure the rest out on their own.

It’s almost as if golfers assume that because it’s a little shot (which is not much bigger than a putt in reality) it will be easy enough to play and while technically there is some merit to that idea, in practice, as you are no doubt aware an awful lot of golfers struggle with chipping and as a result, a large amount of golfers will happily tell you, that their chipping isn’t very good!

Which can be a bit of a problem when, depending on the skill level of the golfer, chipping can make up between 5 to 15% of your golf score on most days.

Most golfers will waste one, two or more shots on each hole when chipping, either by messing up the chip shot and having to play another one or by not ending up close enough to be able to comfortably one putt to finish the hole.

Take a minute now to think about the last game of golf that you played.

What score would you have had if every chip shot finished close enough to one putt?

The Little Book of Pitching
The Little Book of Pitching

The Little Book of Pitching – If you are a golfer that’s new to the game and wanting to learn the right way to pitch or an existing golfer that is struggling with your pitching, wanting to improve it or one of those many golfers who seems to always get a poor result when you pitch – this book is for you.

As with the golf shot called chipping, the intention when pitching is to get the golf ball onto the green to enable you to then proceed to putt the golf ball into the hole as easily as possible and due to the longer distance that it is usually played from.

It’s fairly unlikely that you will hole many pitch shots (but not impossible of course).

However, when played poorly – a messed up pitch shot can cost you many extra shots during a game through your golf ball ending up in water hazards, sand traps, the rough or a long way away from the hole on the green.

So, just the same as it was with chipping, the main function of pitching is not to actually try to get the golf ball into the hole with the pitch shot – it is to set up the possibility of holing your next shot which will ordinarily be a putt.

As you can probably guess already – pitching can’t be a single type of shot played with the pitching wedge each time and is in fact a group of many different golf shots that can or more correctly – should be played with a multitude of different clubs.

In fact, it’s possible to play a pitch shot with anything from a lob wedge through to a #5 iron – that means any of the following can be used depending on the situation being faced: Lob, sand, gap or pitching wedge, #9, #8, #7, #6 or even a #5 iron.

Definitely not just a shot played only with a pitching wedge!

The Little Book of Sand Shots
The Little Book of Sand Shots

The Little Book of Sand Shots – Most golfers expectations of how they will play their sand shots have been set by watching the Tour Pros that they see on television, wandering into the sand trap with their sand wedge, opening up their stance and usually the face of their sand wedge, then calmly and effortlessly, the Tour Pro goes go on to produce magical shots out of the sand that send the golf ball out onto the green to easily finish near the hole – if it doesn’t go in first of course.

When it comes to most golfers trying to do that sort of thing themselves on the golf course though, things are a little different and if they try to copy the techniques that they think they see those Tour Pros doing, the end result for most golfers is that their golf ball seldom, if ever, comes out first time.

If it does come out at all.

Over the past few years, I have been offering a small group coaching workshop called The Sand Experience which over a 90-minute period guides the golfers along as they discover.

The basic action they need to develop to get out of the sand first time, every time.

What the main differences are in their wedges that allow them to play sand shots effortlessly.

How to adjust for different slopes, length and height sand shots.

How to get out of buried lies, hard sand and really soft sand.

How to create the confidence that you need to approach all sand shots with.

What to adjust to play from fairway sand traps.

The Little Book of Sand Shots contains the most important ideas from the workshop.

How to decide whether you should give up playing golf“If this golf lesson doesn’t work, I’m giving up playing the game!”

I’ve lost count of the number of golfers over the years, who have told me after our first coaching session together that they were thinking something similar to the sentence above when they thought about and then actually, booked the session with me.

Initially, when I started hearing them say things like that, I figured it was just a coincidence but after hearing things like that for a few years, I began to wonder what was going on.

Why were so many golfers, thinking of giving up the game of golf?

Especially when most of them have been regular and experienced golfers, the type of golfers who form the backbone of most golf courses around the world, although every once in a while I’d get the odd beginner or infrequent golfer saying things like that as well, so rather than being something to do with simply getting sick of playing the game over a period of time.

Something else had to be driving these golfers to think like this.

If I hadn’t been able to help in some way during that first coaching session, how many golfers would the game of golf had lost over the years and just what was it, that I was doing which found them changing their minds by the end of that first session, while going on to find an entirely new enjoyment in the game of golf after our subsequent sessions, which almost always, ended up with them describing how their golf was going using entirely different words, such as.

“I’m excited about golf again!”

If you’ve been thinking the same sorts of things as the golfers I described above and as a result, have been trying to decide whether you should give up the game of golf – this book is for you!
